Belloc, Joseph Hilaire Pierre
- Belloc, Joseph Hilaire Pierre
(1870–1953)
Historian and Critic.
Belloc was born near Versailles, of Anglo-French parents. He was educated at Cardinal newman’s Oratory School in Birmingham and at the University of Oxford. For a short period he was a Member of the British Parliament, but after 1910 he concentrated on journalism and his other writing. He consistently upheld the liberal Roman Catholic view and his essays, histories, biographies and travelogues were widely read during the middle years of the twentieth century. In particular, generations of children were brought up on his Cautionary Verses, which, in a light-hearted manner, encouraged them into civilised behaviour.
